{"id":264,"date":"2011-08-11T00:59:25","date_gmt":"2011-08-11T05:59:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/?p=264"},"modified":"2011-08-11T00:59:26","modified_gmt":"2011-08-11T05:59:26","slug":"coming-to-miami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/coming-to-miami\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming to Miami"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I begin my fourth week in adjusting to Miami life, I wanted to share a few things that I have come to learn (and unlearn) about this city that everyone should know.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00c2\u00a0<del>Yo quero Taco Bell.<\/del> \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<strong>\u00c2\u00a1usted debe saber hablar espa\u00c3\u00b1ol!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/coming-to-miami\/rosetta-stone-spanish\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-265\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-265\" title=\"rosetta-stone-spanish\" src=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/rosetta-stone-spanish.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/rosetta-stone-spanish.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/rosetta-stone-spanish-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/rosetta-stone-spanish-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Everyone speaks spanish here&#8230; your neighbors, the people at mcdonald&#8217;s on the french fries, \u00c2\u00a0the grocery store clerks, the babies, hell even the dogs bark in espanol. \u00c2\u00a0Thank God I managed to procure a version of Spanish Rosetta Stone before I left Charlotte. \u00c2\u00a0I mean, if you didn&#8217;t see American flags flying here and there as you traveled about town, One could easily be mistaken for being in a Latin American country. \u00c2\u00a0For those few people that you run into that don&#8217;t speak Spanish, they speak French! \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m a little pissed that all of those years of French in high school and college didn&#8217;t properly prepare me for Haitian french accents nor speed of delivery.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00c2\u00a0<strong>Don&#8217;t let the smoove taste fool you!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/coming-to-miami\/miami_skyline\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-266\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-266 alignright\" title=\"miami_skyline\" src=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/miami_skyline-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/miami_skyline-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/miami_skyline.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s true that all of the glamour and glitz you see on tv and in movies about Miami is true with the beautiful cars, beautiful people, gorgeous water and city sky line, that&#8217;s really only about 5% of actual Miami. \u00c2\u00a0I mean Lebron, J.Lo and Scarface stays there, but the other 95% of Miamians stay in places that look more like this ghetto below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/coming-to-miami\/1070-caliph-street-opa-locka-fl-33054\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-267\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-267\" title=\"Most_of_Miami\" src=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/1070-caliph-street-opa-locka-fl-33054-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/1070-caliph-street-opa-locka-fl-33054-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dannybyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/1070-caliph-street-opa-locka-fl-33054.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. \u00c2\u00a0<strong>WTFX is up with all of these mosquitoes??<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Living in what I guess could be described as one giant, humid marshland, Miami has some of the most viscious mosquitoes I&#8217;ve ever encountered. \u00c2\u00a0I mean they wait on your doorstep for you to come out. \u00c2\u00a0They roll in swarms like gnats. \u00c2\u00a0They&#8217;ll bite your eyelids. \u00c2\u00a0They bite your earlobes. \u00c2\u00a0If you wore a full kevlar suit from head to toe, with only the left pinkie toe slightly exposed from a sock hole, expect to find a red mosquito bite there in a matter of minutes of being outside. \u00c2\u00a0What I&#8217;m saying in short is, if I can find away to mix the sweet smells of Cool Water cologne with the power of OFF! mosquito repellant, I can forgo all of this Law school BS and retire on my island in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theworld.ae\">http:\/\/www.theworld.ae<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0The only thing that trumps the mosquitoes here in numbers are the spiders! \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Normally, I&#8217;d cut down all spider nets and squish each one within seconds of seeing them, however, they are the lesser of the evils in this battle of worthless insects. \u00c2\u00a0Now if I could only get them to capture and eat all the mosquitoes around my pad, my time in Miami would be magnificent.<\/p>\n<p>4. \u00c2\u00a0<strong>Yes those jeans do make your butt look fat and not in the good way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are not already a native of this area, you are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">overweight<\/span> when you finally visit. \u00c2\u00a0Yes, your body is not in shape for that bikini. \u00c2\u00a0Dude, put that keg belly away. \u00c2\u00a0You may, in all reality, be an 8 to 10 on the flyness scale in the city that you come from, but rest assured when you make it down here, you will be the ugly new kid in class. \u00c2\u00a0For heaven&#8217;s sake, one of my first order&#8217;s of business was to get my ass down to the neighborhood gym because I saw so many good looking people. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m usually the one that doesn&#8217;t care too much that I got some nice love handles, but seriously, people down here don&#8217;t play fair. \u00c2\u00a0There are pencil-legged, early-Arnold Schwarzenegger&#8217;ed bodied, HOMELESS guys on South Beach that are winning Charlie Sheen style. \u00c2\u00a0The writer&#8217;s of People Magazine were waaay off when they voted J.Lo the sexiest woman on the planet this year. \u00c2\u00a0The editor&#8217;s only needed to take a walk down Collins Avenue to officially recind J.Lo&#8217;s title. \u00c2\u00a0As far as I am concerned, King Kong ain&#8217;t got ish on the beautiful people of Miami!<\/p>\n<div>5. \u00c2\u00a0<strong>Be sure to wear your rubbers<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Until I got here, I never understood why that, in Tony Toni Tone&#8217;s classic song, \u00c2\u00a0it &#8220;Never Rained in Southern California.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0The answer is completely simple and clear to me now!
